The Haitian Citizen: My Person Of The Year
On December 15th, Time Magazine will crown its 2010 Person Of The Year. Julian Assange, the Chilean miners, Lady Gaga and others have deservingly – or not been put on the short list of possible laureate of the title.
As I see it, the choice is simple. The title should be bestowed on the Haitian Citizen. For sentimental reasons, of course, but also because I don’t remember a community not at war, being put through the ringer so much in such a short time.
The Haitian Citizen has been failed by Mother Nature, by science and by Human kind camouflaged in greedy political administrators and yet, he is still standing. He has also taught me, taught us that we are not nearly grateful enough. He has reminded me, reminded us that it is better to give than to receive.
And sure, receiving the Time Magazine title won’t make a difference in the life of the Haitian Citizen inexplicably and shamefully still living in a tent, almost a year after the earthquake but if the title keeps the Haitian Citizen in the news and ensures that we don’t forget him then I’m all for it.
